SCA applauds addition of seats at Western College of Veterinary Medicine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sept 29th, 2022 Saskatoon The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) is pleased with today’s announcement by the Government of Saskatchewan to fund an additional 5 seats at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). This raises the number of seats funded by the province to 25. “Our industry, like many others, is facing a shortage of vets, which can negatively impact our industry, animal welfare, and even our ability to expand,” stated Arnold Balicki, SCA Chair. “I applaud the government for recognizing the value and necessity of investing in additional seats at the WCVM.” “Our hope is that this will open the door for more students to pursue a DVM, focusing on large animals,” said Grant McLellan, SCA CEO. “Addressing the chronic shortage of vets in Saskatchewan requires a multi-faceted approach. This is an important piece of that strategy.” “This announcement, coupled with the earlier announcement regarding changes to the loan forgiveness program for vets and vet techs, clearly shows the priority this government has placed on trying to address this issue,” continued Arnold Balicki. “We recognize more work is needed to address this complex issue, but we know that the concerns we’ve been bringing forward from our producers are being heard,” concluded Grant McLellan.
