About the SCA

On January 29, 2009 the Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association (SCA) was established under the authority of The Agri-Food Act, 2004  and operates according to The Cattle Development Plan Regulations  under the supervision of the Agri-Food Council . As a development commission, the SCA provides for the effective development and promotion of the industry by investing levies collected through the sale of beef cattle in the province.

The SCA was established with 11 regional districts across the province. District elections will allow for one director to be elected in each of these districts. In addition, two directors will be appointed as nominated from the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) and the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association (SCFA). The sixteen-member board also includes the immediate past chair person of the SCA.

With the mandate to effectively provide one single, unified voice for the province's beef industry, with representation from all industry sectors and across all regions of the province, the development process for the SCA has focused on creating an organizational and governance structure which meets those goals. Through this democratic process every "registered producer" (any Saskatchewan cattle producer who has paid levies within the last two years and has not received a refund) is entitled to one vote and is eligible to hold office as a director for the Association.

Beef producers in Saskatchewan currently pay a $3 per head marketed levy, this will not change. What will change is that the administration of both provincial ($2 refundable) and national ($1 non-refundable) levies will become the responsibility of the SCA. Currently, the authority to collect these levies is found under the Cattle Marketing Deductions Acts and is administered by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. This change will mean the creation of producer-led and controlled fund with beef producers, the ones in charge of leading and shaping their own industry.
